Speaking Exam Trainer

Get ready for your oral exam (level A2). Practise the questions, the information gap activity with a partner, and a complete practice test.

What happens in the exam?

  1. Intro. The examiner welcomes you and tells you what will happen.
  2. Warm-up. Easy questions: How are you? What’s your name? How do you spell it?
  3. Speaking about yourself. You get questions about family and home, activities or school. About 2 minutes for each of you.
  4. Information gap activity. You and your partner talk to each other. One of you has an info card, the other has a prompt card with key words and asks questions. Then you swap. About 2 minutes each.
  5. End of the test. The examiner thanks you.

The whole test takes about 8–10 minutes. You take it with one partner (sometimes with two).

Five tips for the exam
  • Answer in full sentences and add a reason or an example.
  • In the information gap, ask real questions: “How much does it cost?” and not just “Cost?”.
  • Don’t worry about small mistakes. Keep talking.
  • If you don’t understand, ask: “Sorry, could you repeat that, please?”
  • Listen to your partner and react: “Great!”, “Really?”, “Thank you.”

Talk about yourself

In the exam you answer some questions about yourself. Choose a topic, answer the question aloud and check your answer with the help words and the example.

Information gap activity

One partner has the info card, the other partner has the prompt card and asks questions. Then you swap with a new card.

1. Choose a card

Word help

Info cards are full of numbers, prices and addresses. Learn how to say them, and how to ask for help.

How do I say it?

Click a card to see how you say it. Group them: prices, times, dates, ages and web addresses.

The alphabet and spelling

In the warm-up you have to spell your name. This is how the letters sound:

      Print cards

All ten information gap cards with the matching prompt cards, to print and use in class.

What do you want to print?

Tip for pair work: print the info cards and the prompt cards separately, cut the prompt cards out and give each pair one info card and one prompt card for the same topic.

For teachers: how to use the cards and the trainer
      • The ten cards cover the topics of the exam: summer camp, juice bar, new movie, festival, reality show, museum, shopping mall, theme park, job advert and school trip.
      • Each card has a numbered prompt card with key words. The first three work like the sample cards in the exam guide.
      • Pair work on two devices: in “Information gap”, choose a card, then use Copy link for my partner. Your partner opens the link and sees only the other card.
      • The mock exam follows the exam procedure for two or three candidates (intro, warm-up, speaking about yourself, information gap, end).
      • Self-check lists in the trainer are for practice only. They are not official marking criteria.
