Here are words about the USA. Every word has a sentence in the past simple. Look at the verbs in the sentences: they are in the past simple, too.
| English | Deutsch | Example sentence (past simple) |
|---|
We use the past simple for things that happened in the past and are finished. Often there is a time word in the sentence.
Auf Deutsch
Du benutzt das Simple Past (einfache Vergangenheit), wenn etwas in der Vergangenheit passiert ist und zu Ende ist. Oft steht eine Zeitangabe im Satz. Für alle Personen (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) ist die Form gleich. Es gibt kein -s in der 3. Person: He walked.
Achtung: Im gesprochenen Deutsch sagen wir meistens das Perfekt: „Wir sind letzten Sommer nach New York geflogen.“ Im Englischen nimmst du bei einer abgeschlossenen Zeit das Simple Past: We flew to New York last summer.
| Englisch | Deutsch |
|---|---|
| yesterday | gestern |
| last week / last month / last year / last summer | letzte Woche / letzten Monat / letztes Jahr / letzten Sommer |
| two days ago | vor zwei Tagen |
| in 1969 | im Jahr 1969 |
| when I was ten | als ich zehn war |
| then | dann |
Auf Deutsch
Bei regelmäßigen Verben hängst du -ed an die Grundform: to walk → walked. Achte auf die Schreibweise:
| Regel | Beispiele | Erklärung |
|---|---|---|
| Normalfall | to walk → walked to visit → visited to watch → watched | Einfach -ed anhängen. |
| Verb endet auf -e | to live → lived to move → moved to arrive → arrived | Das e ist schon da: nur -d anhängen. |
| Konsonant + y | to study → studied to carry → carried to try → tried | Das y wird zu -ied. |
| Vokal + y | to play → played to stay → stayed to enjoy → enjoyed | Nach einem Vokal bleibt das y: einfach -ed. |
| Kurzer Vokal + ein Konsonant (einsilbig) | to stop → stopped to plan → planned to shop → shopped | Der letzte Konsonant wird verdoppelt. |

Sie haben eine eigene Form, die du lernen musst: to go → went, to eat → ate, to see → saw. Im Simple Past benutzt du die zweite Form (Past simple), nicht die dritte.
Das wichtigste Verb ist to be: I / he / she / it was, we / you / they were.

Im Simple Past brauchst du did für Verneinung und Fragen. Nach did steht immer die Grundform des Verbs, also ohne -ed und nicht die 2. Form.
Ausnahme: to be braucht kein did: Was he in New York? He wasn’t there.
