Verb + -ing, used like a noun: “I enjoy swimming.” “Swimming is fun.” English uses this form all the time — after certain verbs, after every preposition, and as the subject of a sentence.
enjoy + -ing
After certain verbs
“I enjoy swimming.”
Verbs like enjoy, like, stop and finish are followed by the -ing form, not “to”.

A gerund is a verb with -ing that works like a noun. It can be the subject of a sentence, the object of a verb, or follow a preposition. The spelling usually follows one of four simple rules.
| Rule | Base form | -ing form |
|---|---|---|
| Normal: just add -ing | play, read, talk | playing, reading, talking |
| One short vowel + one consonant: double the consonant | stop, swim, run, sit | stopping, swimming, running, sitting |
| Ends in a silent -e: drop the e | live, make, write, dance | living, making, writing, dancing |
| Ends in -ie: change ie to y | die, lie, tie | dying, lying, tying |
Merke: the doubling rule only applies when the last three letters are consonant–vowel–consonant and the stress is on that last syllable — that’s why stop → stopping, but visit → visiting (no doubling, because the stress is on the first syllable).
Some verbs are always followed by the gerund, never by “to + verb”. Here are the most common ones for Year 8, with an example sentence for each.
| Verb | Deutsch | Example sentence |
|---|
Merke: “I enjoy to swim” is wrong. Say “I enjoy swimming.” These verbs never take “to + verb”.
Auf Deutsch
Nach bestimmten Verben steht im Englischen immer das Gerundium, nie „to + Verb“. Diese Verben muss man einfach lernen — es gibt keine Regel, die vorhersagt, welche Verben das Gerundium nehmen und welche den to-Infinitiv. Die Tabelle oben zeigt die wichtigsten für Klasse 8.
After every preposition (in, on, at, about, for, of, before, after, without, instead of, by …), the verb that follows is always the -ing form.
A gerund can also be the subject of a sentence — the first word, doing the action.
Auf Deutsch
Nach einer Präposition (in, on, at, about, for, of, before, after, without, instead of, by …) steht im Englischen immer das Gerundium — nie der Infinitiv mit „to“. Das gilt auch, wenn im Deutschen gar keine Präposition vor dem Verb steht, z. B. bei „interessiert am Lernen“ → interested in learning.
Ein Gerundium kann außerdem das Subjekt eines Satzes sein, so wie ein Nomen: Swimming is good exercise. = „Schwimmen ist eine gute Übung.“
